I've wanted to read this book for a long time and finally started it because I wanted to read a crime or a spy thriller. I didn't know what to expect and just went for it.
I liked the narrative style, and the main character. There are not many books that describe a spy story from the perspective of a black woman. The book is therefore also very political in nature. Several topics are dealt with; the main character's own experience as one of the only Black women in the FBI, and the intersectional discrimination that results from this. But it also deals with the political circumstances in the 70s and 80s in the USA (Communism, Black Liberation, Cold War, etc.) and in West African countries.
I like novels with real, historical events. I learnt a lot of new things. For example, I knew nothing about Thomas Sankara or the political situation in Burkina Faso in the 1980s. Learning more about him as a person and his political ideologies and actions was rewarding. At the same time, I wonder to what extent the author had this insight into the life and thoughts of this personality, who really existed.
Once again I was also disgusted and enraged by the audacity of the US to interfere everywhere under the disguise of democracy (nobody asked for it). They overthrow entire regimes, start wars and think they have the right to do so. The fear of communism in the 70-90s seems so ridiculous, and yet the government and the system works exactly the same in 2024 (look at Israel, Afghanistan and other countries). I also found it exciting to read this story because I'm reading Angela Davis' autobiography at the same time, so I can get a different perspective on the Communist Party, Black Panthers and Black Liberation Movement. In this book, the perspective of federal agents, American propaganda, is told, but it is noticeable that the main character is critical of many things.
To summarise, it was an exciting story, a bit slow paced at times, but in summary really very well researched and presented. I would recommend it to people who are interested in spy novels as well as political topics such as female empowerment, the political situation in West Africa in the 80s, the work of the CIA and mindset.

What a surprising way to write the storyline. I enjoyed it being told as a story of a journal or letter to her children and thought that to have been a touching sentiment. I do wish there was a little more depth about certain parts of her story and would have liked more content/ content elaborated on. I’m wondering if because it was a journal to her children the author kept some topics “private” and/ or didn’t go into depth. I enjoyed it he book, but when it was done i wished there had been more. The “endings” of people/ situations/ etc ended too soon for me. I would recommend to his book to anyone who likes historical (80s…historical?!) fiction.

This is a great premise and I wouldn't say it was boring like some other reviews, but I agree that the narrative style choices meant it lacked immediacy and suspense. The events are very "thriller" but the way it's written is too reflective to be exciting. In the end, I just wish it had given us more.

Das war sehr unerwartet. Ich griff zu dem Buch, weil ich nach Romance ein zweites Genre für mich neu entdecken wollte: den Thriller! Und die ersten fünf Seiten des Romans verbreiten auch ordentlich Action. Nur um dann für den Rest des Buches eine ganz neue Stimmung einzuschlagen. Erzählt wird kein packender Spionageroman, sondern vielmehr die berührende Geschichte einer jungen Frau, die in einem korrupten System landet, um sich ihrer Schwester nahe zu fühlen. Wir erleben die Innenwelt der Protagonistin und folgen ihr erst in die Einsamkeit und dann Burkina Faso. Dabei erzählt die Autorin über verschiedene Meta-Kurven von den Gräueln, welche die amerikanischen Geheimdienste im kalten Krieg begangen.
Als Teil des Systems ist enthüllt die Hauptfigur deren Antlitz und füttert uns Leser*innen mit (un)bekanntem historischen Kontext. Einen Thriller bekommt man mit diesem Buch eher nicht, dafür eine politische Studie über Rassismus und Kolonialismus erzählt von einer sympathischen jungen Frau. Good Read.

Jag har sett en del negativa recensioner av den här boken online. "Tråkig", och "inget momentum", är åsikterna. Jag gissar att det beror på det andra ordet i titeln - folk har förväntat sig en spionthriller. Det gjorde jag också; vilket lämnade mig glatt överraskad. Jag är inte så förtjust i spioner, men redan efter första stycket är jag förtjust i Marie. Redan i första meningen tar hon dels fram en pistol, och dels trampar på en legobit. Och lite så är boken; det handlar om olika secret services och människorna som jobbar inom dem, men också om att växa upp. Det första ordet i titeln är förmodligen mer relevant än det andra, och här får jag en personlig roman om hur det är att växa upp som svart kvinna i USA. Sådana har jag läst en hel del de senaste åren, vilket gör att spion-grejen känns givande, även (bara?) för mig som inte gillar spioner.
