Refreshingly different, character driven spy novel.

American Spy by Lauren Wilkinson could have been a better book. It was an interesting subject, but the writing was difficult to follow and interfered with my understanding of the plot. The book left me with questions, not because I was moved by the story and couldn't stop thinking about it, but because there were many loose ends that weren't tied up. There were a lot of ideas that came together to make this book, and those ideas didn't seem to fit together in a cohesive storyline. This book was meh.

  • Just kind of meh in the end

This novel is a gripping tale of duality and duplicity. of the lie we tell others and the lies we tell ourselves, and who we decide to trust with the truth. At first I believed the story-telling was slow, but upon completion, I realize that I thought this story was going to be about a spy. This book is about a mother, a sister, and a citizen. I really enjoyed it.

Hmmmm. American Spy let me down. The premise is intriguing, but the execution didn’t work well for me. The narrative style, in part, is a second person point of view where the protagonist is writing a journal for her sons. But it doesn’t work as that journal is also written as part of the spy narrative so it  is a very poor accounting for Marie’s sons. It was a poor accounting for the reader, too, as it felt like the author was withholding bits of information just to keep the reader hooked, but not because it helped build suspense. I spent too much time frustrated just piecing things together.

I read this book as my pick for Burkina Faso on my Around the World reading challenge. There were not many English language options, and this fit the bill, but if you are doing the same, I’d consider another book.

Great story and characters

This was a great book, it kept my interest the entire book and I didn't know what was going to happen next. The book blended the excitement of a spy story with the richness of human interactions.
