The Broken Room by Peter Clines

I read this because I enjoyed Paradox Bound by the same author, but this book was quite different: tense, violent and occasionally really gross. The premise feels familiar--Stranger Things if Eleven had tracked down Jason Bourne instead of bumping into Hopper. There is a unique twist to this story and it is a gripping, cinematic ride, but I need a break from plots involving horrible experimentation on children. Still worth reading, but no more, thanks.

tl;dr i love Peter Clines. skip this one.
i've read most everything he's written -- nothing better than '14' in my opinion -- and often times his books are a nice little romp with quirky characters getting into shenanigans they didn't ever expect to get into.. this was sort of that but far fewer characters. and one of the two main characters was far too unlikable for my taste. it took me 3+ months to get through this one, and i was hoping/expecting to breeze through it in one month. easily my least favorite of his novels, though he has garnered more than enough good will with me to continue reading anything he's willing to put out.

The main character from this book reminded me of Billy Summers (from [b:Billy Summers|56852407|Billy Summers|Stephen King|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1618151020l/56852407._SY75_.jpg|88930370]). Too many similarities.

Light actiony thriller romp with notes of eldritch horror. It isn't perfect, some parts are a bit tacky, but I am a sucker for a knight in shining armor tale even if that knight is an alcoholic. Bonus points, there is no cliché savior romance.

If you like the weirder aspects of Peter Cline’s stories, this one won’t disappoint. Really fun and like most of his books I had no problem visualizing the story as it unfolded.
