Maybe she is funnier on TV? I wish she would include more humor in her books, but otherwise the essays are relatable and enjoyable.

A poignant, piercing perspective

Jessi Klein writes with beauty, humor, and truth about parenting (and being a person right now.) The observations she makes are somehow dazzlingly fresh and also familiar, like these thoughts have existed at the periphery of your awareness for years. I’m excited to read the next one when she gets into Big Kid Land.

Humorous ands relatable, Jessi touches on the craziness of motherhood and compares it to a hero’s journey.

Funny, smart, insightful. I listened to the audiobook and kept laughing out loud in public while listening.

Read the entire book at the car dealership while waiting for my service appointment, thinking gratefully about the alone time I’m getting here, and never feeling more seen than in Klein’s magnificent essays about birth, parenting young children, being a working mom and yearning for more time with your kid and also more time to work, and reclaiming your identity when you’re so-and-so’s mom. I loved this.

I read too many essay collections about motherhood in a row that this one was underwhelming, albeit quite fun. I felt for Jessi Klein a handful of times, and she made me laugh out loud once or twice. But the book lacked structure and could have been better edited.

Heartbreaking, relatable, funny and poignant. I listened to this book, and I highly recommend hearing Klein's personal emphases and tone as she reads this deeply personal collection. I felt seen, and understood, and much less alone. There are several phrases from this book I cannot get out of my head, specifically as I look at my own, ahem, deeply selective small child and mindlessly read a book about unicorns. Highly recommend, particularly to the parents in my life.
