This is heart wrenching but in an educational, real, and enjoyable way.

It was great to spend some time with Taylor and Turtle again and to get to know Alice more. I will say I missed Lou Anna and Mattie and just the casual life that was left in Tucson. However, the new characters were vivid and charming and authentic.

This story painted a beautiful depiction of the aftermaths of tremendous loss and pain and horrors and just how deep the wounds can be and how many generations will carry the scars.

There was no right answer to the problem. There was not only one person who was in the wrong. Humans are messy. Life is messy. But despite the mess, humans can also be beautiful and kind and selfless. Any situation involving humans is always complex and has multiple perspectives. If nothing else, this book showed the kaleidoscope of views that can distort or clarify a situation.

Jax easily became my favorite character. Every conversation with him brought a laugh, yet he remained the anchor, the voice of home and family and steadiness throughout the chaos.
