This was an enjoyable book. Loved the rage of the main character, I loved the conceptualization of the yin yang driven magic system. The romance was enjoyable if a little superficial at points. The plot pacing is incredibly fast, and if you are not someone interested in reading robot fight sequences, this is not the book for you. But it definitely not for me.

What is very apparent early on is that the MC is a deeply flawed character, whose thoughts in womanhood, war, and vengeance change throughout the book, as she grows. Sometimes this change is a little on the nose, but given it's a YA book... not surprising.

Finally, ouch, that ending! I'm looking forward to the next one!

What an amazing read! Not only is the world and story compelling, but Zhao cleverly and effectively flips every trope on its head.

Right from the beginning when she assassinates the pilot you know this going to be a different story, and it does not disappoint.

Every time I turned it on (audiobook) i was immediately immersed in the narrative and felt transported to their world. It could have done without the epilogue (that would started the next novel very well), but that’s my only complaint. I would definitely read this again and highly recommend it if you’re looking for a classic story with a fresh take.
