So fun! Love the concept, really engaging! Some things get a little repetitive or cheesy, but the concept is so fascinating and you really end up rooting for the characters.

Okay. I can't into this book wanting to at least like it even though I knew exactly two things about the book - there was a polyam love triangle and Power Ranger style machines. (I never actually paid attention to Power Rangers when my brothers watched it, maybe I'm wrong about how they worked, but that's what I pictured.)
I didn't expect that I would be so unable to put this book down that I would get the audiobook so that I could continue reading it even when driving. Haha! I mean, I could have used my text-to-speech function, but I wanted proper narration for this book if I didn't have eyes on the screen.
I appreciated the content warning at the beginning of the book. And the snarky "if you want accurate history, read nonfiction" bit included in the disclaimer.

I absolutely loved this!! It was a really fun read and I did enjoy it overall.
Only thing is - I wish there was more interaction + development of the dynamic between Shimin and Yizhi, since the love triangle to polycule plot was one of the main things that drew me to the book. It's probably because the book is in Zetian's POV, but it really didn't feel like Shimin and Yizhi interacted all that much throughout the course of the book. I'm hopeful for more development of those two in the upcoming second book, but given the ending of this book, I'm unsure how much 'screen time' Shimin will get.
That aside, I am super stoked for Heavenly Tyrant.
Only thing is - I wish there was more interaction + development of the dynamic between Shimin and Yizhi, since the love triangle to polycule plot was one of the main things that drew me to the book. Hay alguna cosa que no me ha convencido del worldbuilding y los giros son previsibles, pero la historia está bien llevada, se lee del tirón y los personajes me han gustado mucho (sobre todo Yizhi <3).

The characters in this book might be some of my favorites of the year! Loved the concept of defying gender stereotypes and norms. She is a badass and doesn't hesitate when having to make the difficult decisions. She is ruthless and I love that.
My only criticism with this book is just that the technology and the magic system was so complex that I was somewhat confused at times. I think that the concept was definitely there, but maybe wasn't explained quite as thoroughly as it could have been. But I'm so excited for the sequel!

I listened to this audiobook. Sometimes it was hard to keep up with everything happening. It is feminist and maybe even femgore. It's a sci-fi and kind of like transformers but with a test of men/women pairs piloting the large battle bots. The main character is a woman with very high natural strength and she signs up to be a pilot to avenge her sister's death.
