The intro had too much of a "I'm not like other girls" vibe and the power system seemed to hinge of brutality against women in a way that squicked me out. I'm sorry, I was so excited for this, the premise sounded awesome, but it just wasn't for me. Maybe I'll come back and give it another shot to find out I'm wrong, but for now I'm not up for it.

I honestly loved it. So why not 5 stars?
Well I wish we knew more about Zetians sister besides the fact that they got along and that she's dead. I found the battle scenes kind of confusing. That could just be me tho, I'm not the brightest. There are a lack of female characters. The ones that are there are either awful or murdered.
The rest I loved!
I loved Zetian and how chaotic she was, really a breath of fresh air to see a main character who is honestly fucking insane in the all the best ways. Shimin has my heart, he is a great character and Yizhi was also a delight, I loved both of their characters and was honestly such a fan of the solution to the love triangle.
The twists at the end of the book!! What!!! I have to wait how long for the second book?? Unfair. I kinda did that to myself tho when I decided to start reading an incomplete series.

This was a fun read.
I enjoyed the fast pace of this book and the fact that we got a VERY ambitious and not "good" protagonist- this being all the more notable given this character was a woman.
I felt like the plot, world building, and relationships were all quite rushed. There was a lot of telling and note showing. I found myself longing for better diction and therefore more immersion.
I think I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if it was not YA- but that is often the case for me. I struggle with the simplicity of YA fantasy or sci-fi, given that these are obviously not simplistic worlds or stories.
The ending was quite rushed and I could definitely see the twist coming.
Still, it was fun to read this book and it reminded me of the gundam animes I loved as a kid.
Might read the next one, but am in no rush.
