I was going to write a long and in-depth review but I feel that, in the end, the best review for this book would be fairly short. The main character takes no shit and goes hard, how else can I say it? It’s refreshing to read a female character that is forced to survive uncountable horrors and, for once, decides NOT to always take the high ground. That alone (besides the excellently done worldbuilding and character development) would have been reason enough for me to read.

Xiran Jay Zhao, the writer that you are. They deliver on all the things that are promised in the promo. Reading this book I realize I was expecting Zetian's rage to simmer down. For her to become more compassionate and merciful as she gained more power, because with heroic female characters you expect them to be good and merciful despite their anger. Fuck that. No mercy. If nothing else this book is an indulgence in the angriest parts of me that the kindest parts of me are desperate to keep down. Required reading for all genders.
