Descriptions of how 'lotus feet' are shaped made me uncomfortable, and I didn't gel well with the story.

I’ve watched the author on YouTube and it’s obvious she knows her stuff in terms of Asian history. I’m glad she’s found success with her writing, especially when it sounds like her family didn’t have her back.
As much as I wanted to, though, I just couldn’t get myself to like this book. There was no subtlety to the themes whatsoever, and the ideals are hammered down every other page. There’s no room for the reader to make up their own mind about what might be right or wrong because the narrator takes it upon herself to remind us that patriarchy = bad with every breath.
I seem to be in the minority, though, looking at the ratings on here. Best of luck to the author on her next novel!

Characters felt very flat and/or linear in their development (I liked Shimin though). Would have liked to see the rage in the main character build up as she discovers/realizes more about her own trauma and what's generally going on. Rather than her rage being there from the very beginning (although I guess one could argue for it with the sister's death, but maybe she could start out with seeing this as an honor that later turns into a thirst for revenge?), I feel this would have made her more relatable.
Bonus points for cool concept, disability rep and polyamorous romance.
