The level of detail and research that went into this immense biography is worth a perfect rating alone. The new insights, the exploration of other people in Plath's life, and the dissection of the struggles of an artist (especially a female writer during the peak of toxic masculinity and male insecurity and control) are all unforgettable... and left me frustrated, angry, and in awe.

The audiobook made this 1000+ page tome less daunting, but now that I’m finally done after several months, I feel its absence. Some takeaways: Sylvia is by no means a perfect person, nor she is exempt from the bigotry of “her time”, and this intimate timeline does not shy away from or romanticize that; biographies that include sociocultural contexts understand nothing happens in isolation and “cause” or “blame” cannot be attributed to one variable; admittedly, the Wuthering Heights of it all; the humanity of an artist is so often erased by their legacy, but to follow Sylvia from birth to death feels like a rare opportunity to honor her life, her vision, and all of the nooks and crannies that were never part of her mythos.
