Imagine Rear Window, but written by Virginia Woolf. It's also basically as good as that.

This book handles a universal human experience, feeling isolated and having a longing for human connection, and takes it to the extreme through having the narrator develop an obsession with three women as a result of her feelings of isolation.

It also perfectly interweaves reality with delusion making it so that the reader is unclear on what is real or fake within the book.
Did she ever actually talk to the sisters or was that mere delusion? Furthermore, are the sisters even real?

it always impresses me when a book is much more complex than you might think when you hear just the premise. here, the story follows a girl who watches the three women living opposite her and has a variety of thoughts about them that turn into an obsession. i thought the narrator was very intriguing - how she imagined the women's lives, ended up obsessively watching them to the point where they were on her mind practically all the time, and the way she eventually interacted with the women. her psychology is super interesting for sure and so is her relationship with her family ^^ i also thought the style and atmosphere were amazing, a big part of why i liked this so much. this was a very unique story and i loved it ♡

Who are the sisters? Are they real? What's happening in this story? Even when you finish you are left with questions. The writing seems meandering and loose but in fact is concise, you see the surroundings movements clearly, you just aren't sure if what we are being told is clear. Beautifully written, a real treat.

“I often found them absorbed in a silence that seemed to thicken around them, through which they would have to wade with great effort, before uttering a word…”

This is a complex, crossword puzzle of a book. The whole thing felt claustrophobic but still, I kept reading, craving a few pages of air. That air never came and it made the book even more masterful imo.
Loneliness is explored in such a suffocating way, it makes you question what is really happening and what isn’t. Our nameless protagonist spends painstaking hours watching these three figures across the street. She’s unreliable as hell, but still we want to put our trust in her, earnest as she is.
At times I felt it dragged a little which is the only thing that kept me from giving it 5.

This isn’t the type of book I would recommend to many but if you like these things, give it a read:
- language that envelops
- blurred lines between reality and hallucination
- unreliable narrator
- loose plot
