signs preceding the end of the world is such a hard book to rate bc while im not too into it, there are aspects i rly enjoy still.

on the one hand, i dont quite get the book's focus - or lingering view - on certain things or scenes, and somehow it feels like something is missing, which is super specific of me...not. and as someone who likes to be emotionally impacted by the things she reads, i cant say that this book succeeds in that regard, seeing how sparse and detached it feels, in addition to that head-scratching ending that maybe im too dumb to fully understand.

even so, i absolutely love makina w/ her wry voice and subtly ruthless, no-nonsense, yet utterly human self; i also like her unpredictability, and how she in turn further lends that quality to the story. moreover, herrera definitely explores the themes w/ aplomb even in such a slim novel: his words are economical yet theyre weighted w/ larger implications.

an understatedly adventurous story w/ a mildly confusing ending, this is a short and interesting enough read, though it's one that lacks a certain oomph.
