I was hoping for either more action, or better developed characters, but this was an otherwise solid sci-fi that wrapped up nicely at the end. I prefer a slightly less definitive ending but I know a lot of people like a more resolved feeling.

To elaborate on content warnings:

Death and body horror are pretty self explanatory here. Animal death: A rabbit is killed and its dead body is described in detail. Child abuse: There is a scene where a mother gets frustrated while changing a baby and hits the baby repeatedly on the legs. This is kind of glossed over by the narrative and never brought up again. Car accident: a character drives over a cliff off page. They survive but are injured. We see the aftermath but not in graphic detail. Drug use/abuse: no drugs are actually used but several characters suggest that erratic behaviour and changes in temperament in two of the main cast are caused by covert drug use

I really liked the slow development and careful revealing of clues throughout the book. I don't read many thrillers, but Crichton was able to sustain and increase the tension throughout the novel. The sort-of reveal at the end was predictable, but I still enjoyed it. The only negative part of the book was the intermittent diatribes of technical explanations. I read pretty fast, but I think someone with a slower reading speed might have a bit more difficulty. Definitely would recommend for anyone interested in coding, technology, nanotechnology, etc.
