Every vignette seemed like its own poem, a child picking apart someone else's brain, asking only questions adults would be ashamed or scared to ask, and coming to conclusions about herself through it all. I wished this was longer-but at the same time I understand that it couldn't be, because maybe the next vignette would have been the leaving, and maybe the coming back would have been much later, or never, and I guess the not knowing was the point anyways - I was in love with every character, ached for every character, and loved Esperanza though she seemed to talk about herself only in relation to others. And isn't that how a child learns and grows? By defining the world in vignettes, in people you want to become and people who show you what directions you never want to take? I have discovered that one day, I too might return to mango street. The house I belong to but do not belong to.

A series of poetic stories, The House on Mango Street paints a dreamlike picture of a community that is alive as the monkey’s garden.

I liked the way Mango Street was built in this story. How every neighbour is a main character in their own story that we just see fleetingly as Esperanza weaves in and out of their stories. I also appreciate Esperanza being the odd one out who doesn’t really seem to be able to see all up from the dream that is a childhood on Mango Street, but who desperately wants to make her own story.

A young girl comes of age on Mango Street in Chicago. This was a quick and beautiful book featuring the innocence and dangers of being  a pre-teen girl. You’ll love this book if language is your reading doorway. It was a series of poetic vingettes about the cast of characters who inhabit the main character’s life in her neighborhood, but it was so much more than that too.
