This book challenges the way the reader thinks about their parents' "past lives," or life before children. The plot is not about the main character's development, but rather the development of her mother through her eyes and what she can uncover after the mother's death.  This is a great read for children of diaspora, children who aren't well connected to their parents, and for children who still seek a deeper meaning in life.

I love the concept behind the story, but all of the characters felt lackluster and in the end, I didn't really care about any of their lives. Just an overall ambivalence.

Reading this book was a thirst-quenching experience. The way the book explores the trials of poverty, mother-daughter relationships, immigration, and being lost is beautiful. Even when the book encapsulates destruction, you are struck by how beautifully it is described. But most importantly the book is a story of women and the pains that withstand, sometimes for generations.

solid writing and interesting format. i’ve always liked this kind of story telling and character building but the plot felt scattered and lost at times. the physics element seemed prominent but felt very detached. there wasn’t any satisfying ending that ties everything together and the story just felt a bit flat at the end.

Unique and emotional! I loved reading about Beijing and Shanghai since I lived in Shanghai for almost 5 years and visited Beijing too. It was exciting to see characters development in the cities to be so different...anyways, 10/10 recommend!
