Less than a week into advent but I really love this book. It is simple and the short and meaningful readings and prayers are enjoyed by everyone. Serving dessert to the kids at the same time as I read is icing on the cake.

Good for a group or individual. I used it as a study over a group text. Sent out prompts each day with either art/scripture/music and a discussion question. People replied all day as was convenient for them.

I enjoyed this book to consider my habits and practices and give me new ideas. I found some of what was included didn’t resonate with me but I think that is more about me and my time in life than the book.

Has there been another year in recent memory in which we’ve so collectively felt the groaning of a broken world and longed for things to be made new? This book by Tsh Oxenreider is my suggestion to guide you through this season. Maybe you’ve been observing advent for decades, or maybe you’re not really sure what you believe, but you’re curious about how Jesus can both enter into brokenness and bring hope. Either way, or anywhere in between, this book will be a gentle guide through the season. It’s stunning and it’s simple. This isn’t something to add to your to-do list - it’s an invitation. Each day includes a short meditation, a Psalm to pray, a question for reflection, and a piece of art and music to look up. Do all of that or some, do every day or skip some. Regardless, if you’re feeling weary and don’t want to add one more thing, but still want to engage with the story of Jesus coming into our pain, may I recommend this one?

Shadow and Light is one of the best Advent devotionals I’ve ever used. It is simple, thought-provoking, and uses many different media to engage with the Advent season. I can definitely see us using this book for years to come.

We read through this with our young kids this advent season.
It was short enough and the accompanying playlist and artwork was great to keep young kids semi engaged.
It would have been better just for adults or older children but I went in expecting that as we mostly used to for the intention of experiencing advent together with little to no prep, the kids would even answer the questions with thoughtfulness so we loved the time together as a family.

This is one of my advent traditions. I love the way she ties in art and music as well. If you are looking for something slow and thoughtful to guide you to Christmas, this is a great option!
