An astonishing book. It starts out like a 1920s Jane Austen, and then . . .
Spoilerthe spinster aunt makes a pact with Satan, because she's tired of taking care of everyone else and just wants to enjoy the wild and wooded world a little bit.

This book is radical, feminist, unapologetic. But also it's all so mild and matter-of-fact. What I most appreciated was the invitation to rest in wild places, to have no agenda beyond a rich sensory experience.

Don't read the introduction on this edition. It's just a complete summary of the book, with very little useful analysis.

Thank you to @pear.jelly and the #SpinsterSeptember challenge for putting Lolly Willowes on my radar. I was bewitched by this delightful comedy of manners.

First published in 1926, Sylvia Townsend Warner’s first novel satirizes England’s social and gender norms of the time and provides a charming chronicle of a woman who refuses to marry or devote her life to submissive aunthood, and is determined to pursue her own freedom, even if it means dabbling with the devil.

Highly recommend to friends who enjoy domestic satires, lovely prose and well-drawn characters. Not a lot “happens” in this novel, but it’s a hoot nonetheless. The perfect read for October!
