While the hot and cold vampire/ human romance is the focus, the most intriguing element is the world around it, a re-imagined yet familiar world of what it may be like if vampires were a part of accepted society, but they were the ones in positions of power and influence among humanity- most of which are fighting simply to survive in a world meant to keep them at the bottom of both the food chain and the class system.
Among this it reminded me a bit of True Blood while imagining a different power dynamic, but one akin to sentiments of some vampires feeling they are truly the superior species and shouldn't have to mask their dark, primal natures.
I appreciated the survivalist nature of our heroine, Reyna, and that even as the lust and romance took way, she didn't lose sight of those she loved, the struggle and imbalance in the world, and finding her own purpose.
Our lead vampire, Beckham, is secretive and keeps most at bay, especially his new blood match. I was interested in finding out more about him, but he wasn't as compelling as many other vampire characters for me. Although, the bonus chapter at the end from his perspective did add a layer to his character.
He is a real mix of showing her cares and craves her and showing little regard for Reyna's dignity, heart, and even safety at times. The reveal at the end explains a lot and allowed me to understand the romance and connection a bit more, but even within that he certainly had actions and inactions that were problematic at best. I'll continue the series and see how it goes from here, but the continuous push and pull actually took me out of it at times and had me more indignant and wanting better for Reyna while the attraction was evident. If the beginning of them coming together was this bumpy period and from here there is more respect and openness and less of the hot and cold I can get on board.
Luckily, there was enough about the world building and themes examined that grabbed me and kept me enticed. The ending definitely had me wanting to see where this goes.
I came to this after reading and rather loving Linde's recent series, Oak and Holly Cycle. There are some similar elements with the unwavering familial bonds, mysterious love interest, survivalist heroine, and gritty flawed world. Overall, the Oak and The Holly Cycle is the superior of the two, but especially as a fan of unique use of vampire lore, there's enough here to make The Blood Type a captivating read.

The Monster & the Last Blood Match had a very unique story (I think, although I don't usually read urban fantasy). It was a nice twist on vampires and the world building was very, very intriguing. The current world is ruled by business vampires who seem like the Big Pharma of the city, just using humans and their blood as the pharma part. I did not like the main character, and found myself feeling like some of the other side characters fell really flat. I felt that her brothers were kind of pointless to the story, except to give her the typical "I'm poor and hopeless but I love my family but I love this rich guy more" story.
Again, I thought the storyline was very unique! But the characters fell flat for me, which disappointed me since I enjoyed The Wren so much.
I will be reading the next one and can't wait to see how Linde grows in her writing as she continues weaving magical stories!

Overall, I really loved this book! Yes, I had a few issues with Beckham (the MMC) but I think most of my issues center around the fact that he’s still very much a mystery, even at the end of this book. I really hope he opens up more throughout the rest of the series.
