so i started this story almost immediately after finishing the first one because i loved the first one so much and man the middle of this one just left me with no urge to pick it up which is why i think it took me so long. it just dragged. i will say around the 60% mark i got back into it and truly wanted to finish this story. the ending truly got me. I am shocked at how everything transpired and i really enjoyed it. I enjoyed the back and fourth oraya felt this entire story whether it was her and vincent or her and raihn. i really enjoyed this duology and can’t wait to read the rest.

What the fuck happened

Wow

At times, I found it hard to focus reading both of these books but I think it was because of how raw the emotions are for the characters. Carissa's writing makes my heart ache in a wonderful way. How deep the descriptions of grief, of the vulnerability love brings, of that vulnerability being worth it in the end and how that is juxtaposed with the past. Brilliant, moving, and thrilling.

It’s like they have some amazing sub plots and hit some of the best tropes, but always seem to under develop it and leave it with me thinking how much better that could have been

After feeling a bit ambivalent about The Serpent and the Wings of Night (3.5/5) but loving Six Scorched Roses (5/5), I went into this hoping for at least a 4-star read. Unfortunately, as I got to know the main characters a bit more, I realised I just don’t like them and I couldn’t bring myself to root for their relationship. The story itself also felt flat. I couldn’t help comparing it to The Plated Prisoner series by Raven Kennedy, and for me, this didn’t measure up to it on any level. Once that clicked, I decided to DNF.

The plot development within this story is on point. I love the Interludes offered that offer a brief glimpse to the past while staying on course with the present setting. Broadbent does an amazing job with her character evolution of the FMC and MMC individually and as a couple. The storyline is exciting, suspenseful, gripping at times, full of loving moments, moments of “oohhhh!”, and cheers for good guys. I read most of this book in one sitting - it was hard to put down!

Oraya was annoying AF not forgiving Rain for so damn long and he just kept trying and trying and trying to get her forgiveness.
