╰┈➤ i didn’t expect to love this book, but i also didn’t expect to not enjoy it as much as i did. the fmc, reese, annoyed me so much. she was so rude towards benny, especially in the beginning, for literally no reason. he would give her a polite compliment and she would start acting like he’d just insulted her. i don’t think she realized you can keep your distance from someone and not treat them like they’re the worst person to ever walk on the earth. i also felt like none of the characters had any personality. they were just so bland and uninteresting. i wanted more from both the friendships and the relationship and i just didn’t get it. another thing i didn’t like about this book was that there was literally no plot. i feel like the author was trying to make this a character driven book rather than plot driven, but didn’t even provide us with interesting and complex characters.

╰┈➤ the one thing i did like about this book was the discussion between reese and her friends, natalie and clara, in chapter ten! clara tells reese:

”liking a guy doesn’t make you any less capable of doing your job. you can be a career-minded badass and have your own great love story-they’re not mutually exclusive.”

why do people think that in order for a women to be independent, she’s not allowed to have a romantic relationship with a man? that’s wrong on so many levels! a perfect example of this is when the movie enola holmes came out. so many people were saying: “she’s supposed to be independent, but they’re making her interested in tewksbury.” like bffr?? enola is an incredibly independent women and her relationship with tewksbury does not affect her independence at all. a woman can be independent whether she’s in a relationship with a man or not! anyways! i wouldn’t recommend this book, but it’s definitely not the worst thing i’ve ever read!

3.5 stars in reality. And Forgive the fact that it’s been nearly a month since I read this — sometimes I just get fatigued by the process of writing reviews, haha. This was a really sweet book and Benny as the love interest was 10/10! I appreciated Reese’s growth around her own self-worth and around what it means to be someone with feminist values working in a shitty workplace, which I think teen Lena would’ve loved and been very GIRL POWER about… it’s just that at times it did feel very like, Girlboss Second Wave Feminism.

There were a few snags here, a main one being the fact that Benny’s inner conflict (how to differentiate himself from his family, how to grow as an individual) really seemed to resolve itself in a snap second. And the pacing was a tad uneven for me, but I think that’s a personal problem. All in all this was a sweet YA romance with a valid message about sexism in the food industry. Plus, Benny! Just the cutest.

This was a cute, fluffy book, but left me hungry for more substance. I did appreciate the lens of how social media can impact women and how to combat the devaluing of other people.
