The Fandom

I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars. I was absolutely drawn in from the first page. The Fandom is a real page turner that you won't want to put down. There is a character everyone can identify with and plot twists that take everything you had predicted and turn it upside down. Everyone will have dreamt about being apart of their favourite book, TV or Film at some point but won't always consider how their presence could throw the Canon off track or change it completely. This story explores it all. I cannot wait to start the sequel and find out what happens next. It is a must read for all fangirls or fanboys.

Violet and her friends are a bit obsessed with the fictional world of the Gallows Dance. After a freak accident happens at Comic Con, they find themselves transported to this fictional world. They know the fictional world from the books inside and out, but is that enough to help them survive when they accidentally get the main character killed? Day provides fantastic world-building and a realistic look at every avid reader’s dream. HOWEVER, this is book has problems that will make many youth stop reading.
First, the characters. Violet’s friend Alice is tall and beautiful, and is treated with all the stereotypes applied. Her best friends are constantly threated by her, treat her as if she’s stupid, and her role in the story further supports stereotypes. Violet herself is not a very good friend and isn’t very likable.
Second, Violet is almost raped by a guard. This was completely unnecessary and served no purpose to the plot. I hate when this is used in a story for no reason.
I did make myself finish the book, and I liked the ending. I think the problematic characterization will stop people from reaching the end though.

Ik heb wel genoten! Vertaling was best prima.

My beloved.

"In what fictional world would you like to live?" I think it's one of the most asked questions in fandoms in general. In this book. Violet actually gets to live in her the world of her favourite fandom, but once she gets there, it's not as great as she had expected it to be.
The Fandom is an amazing dystopian novel. It's not about fandom, about cosplay or anything like this. It's actually a dark story, where the love interests that are so prominent in fandom suddenly lose their glamour and where other things turned out to be far more important than a pretty face or great abs. I just loved it!

This book kind of reminds me of Uglies in a way. Kept thinking that the whole time I was reading lol. Not gonna lie, I didn't like this book at first. I pretty much hated all of the characters and the way that the narrator talked about Alice. But I'm glad that I finished it because for once it actually did get better--which is unusual imo. Usually when I start off hating all of the characters I end feeling the same way. But Violet and Alice developed and grew in a way that satisfied me. Idk, I was pleasantly surprised by this one.

Not my cuppa tea, in all honesty.
Which is weird, because the premise is something I would normally love, but I think I'm too far from my teen years to enjoy this book as much as I would have when I was a teenager lost in the Hunger Games and longing for an escape.
Also, dystopian realities are a bit too much for me right now, we are living in such shitty times I tend to look for a happy evasion in books more than a reflection of what this world will probably end up turning into.
I'll give it a try further down the line again, maybe I'm just not in the right mindset now.

Cool concept and mix of modern day with the dystopian world— but the book left me feeling a whole lot of meh.
