The language, the character development, the atmosphere, all of it came together in the end and left me staring at the wall going back through and remembering everything that happened.

If you like books with an unreliable narrator, a focus on mental illness, and visceral descriptions, this book is for you.

We follow Mister N, a writer who has checked himself into a hotel. We are deep within his mind and trying to follow what is happening around him. Sometimes things feel like memories, other times like made up stories, and then also complete and tangible reality. As we weave in and out of Mister N's psyche, we see the effect of violence, war, poverty, and heritage on Mister N and his family. It's truly a heartbreaking story and also one that left me wanting to read more from Barakat and books set in Lebanon.

If you want to read it do take care and check content warnings first, primarily for violence and mental health.

"You write a word: it rises from nothingness, puts on clothes, acquires a body and a face. Then people come up and greet it and act like it’s the one in charge! Oh, and sometimes that well-dressed word forms a gang, and that gang starts roving around and knocking people to the ground, sometimes beating them to death …

That’s what happened to me. I wrote a name. Then the name rose off the paper and became a man…"

Ish.

Mr. N was a famous writer, but has been struggling to write. Checking himself into a hotel, he plans to spend his time on his work, but the staff and the other hotel residents are always there, bothering him with their own stories and problems. And then he sees Luqman, the fictional protagonist of one of his novels, running an Internet cafe nearby! How can this be? Mr. N begins to investigate this, while reflecting on his life as a writer, his troubled family, and his relationships. All of which begin to wind together, flattening time…what’s really going on here? Is the hotel even a hotel? Is Mr. N okay? He’s increasingly not sure about any of this.

This was a strange, wild ride. I was sucked into trying to puzzle out the truths of a story by a highly unreliable and unstable narrator, and it was riveting to the end.
