A riveting memoir! Just finished in preparation for my nonfiction writing workshop with Porochista — today!

Fine writing, just not for me. I couldn't find any common humanity with her.

A devastating kind of read that I needed as a fellow queer person of color trying to make sense of my experience with chronic pain and disability. Khakpour writes with the kind of honesty that reminds you that the vicissitudes of illness can absolutely be contradiction, paradox, unknowing. But there is life in between, in all the spaces that sometimes fade out of view when we cross into the kingdom of the sick.

I have decided to DNF this book a little less than hundred pages before it ends. I can't read this anymore. It started really well and I was really interested in knowing about it, but the second half became really tedious & repetitive. There are too many tangents and turnabouts, too few important events. I give this 2.5 stars.

I definitely don't think this book is for everyone, but as a person with a chronic illness, I related to her story. Listening to the audiobook felt like listening to a friend empathize with a lot of what I've gone through. The story was well-written and touched me deeply.
