Fortfarande stor nostalgifaktor.

My opinion of Vinterstorm ('Winter Storm') has changed a bit since I first added it to my Goodreads library. Namely, I rated it a little lower this time.

This book introduces the story of the next generation. It's the story of Gabriella and Kaleb's dauther Villemo and her headless first love, that of Eldar Sortskov. I like Villemo, or I try to, but my problem with this book is that she's extremely naive for a 17-year old girl. Of course, I don't doubt for a second that 17-year-old girls oftentimes act stupidly and irrationally, I was one myself after all. But she just seems, extreme in a way. Then again, she is affected by the curse.

I loathe Eldar Sortskov. Basically, he's everything that I hate about teenageguys, even if he isn't strictly a teenager himself. The only thing that he has going for him is that he is described as good-looking (but as it is through Villemo's eyes, I don't know how reliable that description is), but honestly, his personality and behaviour is infuriating.

I think the reason I'm not overly happy with this book is that perhaps it reminds me that even the strongest personalities (Villemo) can get distracted, blindsided and blinded by love, an idea of love or simply passion.

That and the fact that even in the midst of grave danger, gruesome experiences such as murder and assault, an uprising, and in the face of possible death, Villemo remains blinded by what is probably more stubborness than love. And it annoys the daylights out of me.

There's an exciting story buried in between the pages of this book, a story of an attempt to free Norway from the reign of Denmark (I'm not entirely sure whether this attempted uprising is historically accurate or an invention of Sandemo's, but I don't doubt for a second that such uprisings were attempted at this time in history). But at the end of the day, it is hidden underneath the story of this reckless first love.

For me, I'd probably have given it 3 stars if it weren't for the way Sandemo handles the discovery, recovery, actions and descriptions of the mentally handicapped people that Villemo and Eldar are responsible for saving. Even though it's likely that it is a little out of the norm for this time, I still get this heartwarming feeling when reading those passages.

This generation is pretty important, so I already know that these characters are the focus of the next book, Blodhævn (literally 'Blood Revenge'), and I'm hoping that I remember correctly and Villemo is just slightly less of a naive and often irrational 17-year-old girl. But I honestly don't remember if that's the case and that is part of the reason I like going back to this series again again; even I forget the details.

Ocena: 2
