Una trama que te atrapa, buenas descripciones de los lugares, las situaciones...

I didn't enjoy this quite as much as I did the later (chronologically speaking) but still historically set books but it was still a gripping mostly fast paced epic tale on the high seas when piracy was state supported as war continues between the English and Dutch. Life takes many a turn for Francis Courtney, his son Hal, and their crew as they make and lose money, ships, and lives over the span of several years. For the most part I enjoyed the tales but did find the female characters a bit hit and miss and far too susceptible to the wiles of Hal with the smallest of provocations, and yet at other times they are deviant, independent, and determined to take their own paths so that was a little odd. Some of the descriptions and writing also felt a little unnecessary and at times repetitive, but this didn't tend to detract too much from the story overall.

Well, what to say about this? My first Wilbur Smith and it feels a bit like a semi- adult JRöbert Louis Stevenson story. Adventure, far flung lands, pirates, clunky sex and the eternally brave hero and the women who worship him. Silly at times and totally strains reality, but surprisingly it WAS kinda fun and I have to admit I enjoyed myself. Simply light entertainment that never rises to the level of Clavell , Jennings or Michener. 3 stars

First book I’ve read in this series and I really enjoyed it. It has a bit of everything from love, lust, death (lots of it), betrayal, greed, torture, adventure, action, loss, etc. Living in Cape Town of course I enjoyed the setting which I know, as well as the background history. I was really wrapped up in the details of the story and the various climaxes that unfolded, and was really wishing it would not end. But good to know there are lots more books in this series!
I really enjoyed this book as a story - full of everything one would expect from a pirate story. But the good guys are so very good, the villains are so very bad, and so many things happen that just can not happen at the same time, that, in my opinion, the book loses in depth, and becomes more of a fairy tale. A very well written and intriguing fairy tale.
