I really enjoyed the historical aspect to this book, and it had some amazing plot twists. I’m a bit disappointed that it didn’t have as much romance as I thought it did, but it’s still a book I’d recommend to those that are fans of light, barely there romance.

Beautifully written yet somehow just not enough. Left me constantly waiting for more, especially more romantic development.

SPOILER ALERT!!! 3/5 star rating
Okay, to start this review off: it took me WAYYY too long to read this damn book. I literally had to push myself every single day to at least read a few pages, but some days, I just could not bring myself to pick this book up. To describe this book, I compiled a few words:
BORING
ANNOYING
PREDICTABLE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pro's: Even though I really did not like this book, there are a few things that were pretty alright in this book. 1.) Freya had actually really good character development. In the beginning, I HATED her. But in the second half of this book, she began to become more of a queen. 2.) Also, the ending wasn't completely predictable. SPOILER ALERT: I did have my suspicions for Madeline, but the way she did kill everybody was not as predictable. It was clever what Rhiannon came up with considering the paint and poison.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Con's: I truly hate writing negative reviews, so this section really makes me sad since it is about to have the most in it...:( 1.) This book was so incredibly boring, I could hardly handle it. It is the main reason why it took me over two months to finish this book! Nothing special happened until like the last 100-150 pages! 2.) Freya's early character sucked. She was annoying, 'quirky' because of her love for science, and then also just kind of mean. One quote really caught my attention: "I'd never even really thought of him as a person." Wtf, Freya? 3.) I am still confused about Freya x Fitzroy, but also how Freya is related to the King. If Freya is in line for the throne, doesn't that mean she kind of has to be related to the King in some way? Even if it is a distant cousin, it made me uncomfortable thinking about it during her and Fitzroy's romantic scenes. I really wish Riannon would have elaborated more and explained their family relationships. 4.) This is a small thing, but it still really bothered me: Literally, nobody ate at meals??? Like, I kind of understand after the mass poisoning at the King's banquet, but it got annoying after about the fourth time of Freya having to 'force food down her throat for performance' 5.) The kingdom of Epria (I even had to just look this kingdom up on Google because of how little it is said...) is the blandest town ever. There is no description of what it looks like or how the people are. I wish Thomas would have taken the time out to explain important buildings and perhaps people that Freya had met when she wasn't Queen. Which brings me to my next point...6.) Why does this book have to start at such a weird spot?? It was right at the King's banquet, which made me feel like I was just jumping into the story with no past knowledge. It would have probably been better if this started perhaps a few days before so we readers could have gotten more acquainted with Freya and Epria before the mass murder.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Like I said before, I hate writing con's in reviews, but this was mostly what this book consisted of! The only reason I am giving it a three instead of a two or even a one is the ending. Action finally picked up and I started to like the characters, bumping it up a star.

This book has been on my TBR for quite a while already and for some reason I never really picked it up. Mostly because I was a little afraid it would be a long and complicated story with loads of politics and English above my average reading level. However, for a book challenge I'm doing I needed a book with loads of politics and this book seemed a very obvious choice. So, I gathered my courage and just got started.

Well, I have no idea why I was so afraid of this book, because this book was in every possible way the perfect book for me. The English was not hard and not complicated and I could easily fly through it while understanding everything on the page. And even the plot, no matter how interesting, wasn't as complicated and layered as I had imagined it to be. It was in every way possible a YA, a YA as I like them best.

It doesn't happen often that a more introverted girl with a love for science gets a chance to shine and it especially doesn't happen often that she all of a sudden becomes Queen. I quite enjoyed her journey. I quite enjoyed watching her grow and learn. And in away I enjoyed mostly how she managed to stay herself despite all the pressure and all the advice of people thinking they did what was best for her. I'm sure this kingdom will have a wonderful future.

However, Freya wasn't the only interesting character. The side characters, from her father to her friends to everyone at court, all had interesting stories to tell too. I especially loved how most of those characters were gray. How they did both kind and horrible things. How they had good ideas and very badly executed plans. Or how they did amazing things even if they weren't always for the right reasons. And I really loved how most conflicts were solved with intelligence and not with violence.

I will certainly read more by this author!

Hey guys, so I finished Long May She Reign by Rhiannon Thomas and it was pretty good. I believe I got rather easily swept into the storyline. It definitely wasnt a hard read, yet it did have your mind working throughout the cream pages, if desired. After all, the new queen did want to find out who the true murder was. ANd therefore, the reader is yanked alongside her as the journey to uncover the truth is transversed through this novel. Naturally, I practically suspected everyone she came in contact with and tried to solve the mystery myself. I think that was what I enjoyed most about this novel. The mystery. The race to find evidence and clues and the investigations and all that. Luckiliy I wasnt as naive as the character, but then again...I wasnt just handed the throne with chaos surrounding me. So, I suppose Freya did quite well under those harsh circumstances. She adjusted rather quickly. I admired how one could physically(figuratively) see her transformation throughout this novel. She went from being a shy scientist whom just wanted to get out of and stay out of any court ideals, to being the center of attention, middle of a opposition, and straight into directly affecting her entire kingdom with a single word. That's a lot of pressure right there. Along with that, she couldnt trust anyone whom had survived the attack, for they could have been in on it. Okay...I am not sure if I can say who did, that might be a spoiler....hmm....umm...well....OKAY, moving on. In the midst of all that, romance blossomed, slow and steady, kind of. Can I just say, that Fitzroy is definitely an intriguing lad. Incredibility so. OKay, what else can I say....The novel was quick read, not too much description, but just enough background info to help shuffle the story along in a dynamic manner. Gahhhh, I really wanna tell you guys about the people whom survived and their role throughout the story, but that would be a spoiler! UGh. Okay, I'm just gonna stop talking now. Bye.

I think I liked this book a lot more than some other people did, but early on I decided Sten was my favorite and I ended up very disappointed by the treatment of his character.

SpoilerHe got locked in the dungeon for doing what he thought was right and no one even bothered to tell him who the actual murderer was. That was seriously sad. Instead of sending Madeleine away, Freya should've made her go down and confess everything to Sten. This way, Sten would get to know the truth about what happened to all of his friends and have a chance to redeem himself. I don't understand why Freya let Madeleine go after she murdered all those people, and she then locked Sten in a dungeon for murdering no one.

He did nothing wrong.

That is not justice. :(

3 stars out of 5 for the story (I expected magic for some reason and was disappointed to have ZERO); 5 out of 5 for a protagonist struggling with anxiety. Much needed in YA fantasy.
