This book is an extremely slow read and mediocre read. The plot was promising and I thought this is different, a girl who survived, all grown, and decides to go after the attacker. I felt the book started off strong as it introduces "The Nothing Man" and his adventure into reading Eve Black's book "The Nothing Man" built around him and how he tortured 5 victims. As you read along, each description is repetitive and the book quickly fills with a vague storyline. Eve Black herself is monotonous and dreary. And her threat to catch the nothing man falls flat with no climax in the storyline and a brainless ending. This book had so much potential in its storyline and plot and I am not sure why chapter, after chapter, you are just getting a bunch of word filler to complete the book. What I did like about Catharine Howard and her writing style was the topic of this book. This was a difficult read as she is describing the horrors of a serial rapist and killer. She did a wonderful job at keeping the descriptions brief and not so graphic. With that being said, she give a spectacular image of how demented a pyschotic person can be and it is just enough to make you cringe. I normally dread lightly on any book that uses extreme graphic detail on this type of material, but Mrs. Howard did a wonderful job. This is the one thing I did like about this book ;)chamm_chamm's review against another edition

A cleverly told story where Howard managed to keep that suspense and mystery going; there were still times where I knew things were going to happen, and they did, but it was written in a way that still held my interest, which is a rarity. A book about a book? With murder? Where the murderer is still at large? Yes please!
I'll be going back for more of Howard's work to see if they're equally good!

Jim Doyle is reading The Nothing Man, and the more he reads, the angrier he gets because he is The Nothing Man, and he remembers the night he murdered Eve Black's family, alongside all of the other people he terrified and tortured. Now he's ready to come out of retirement and he knows who his next victim will be.
This book is a genuinely very creepy and ofttimes terrifying read (especially if you have any fears of burglary, night stalkers or sleep alone!) but I really loved the premise of it. The book worked really well on audiobook due to the dual narration - Eve Black's portions of her book, and then Jim's POV and his reaction to what Eve is saying.
Catherine Ryan Howard is definitely becoming an auto-read author for me as she writes thrillers I love - engrossing, quick to read and original.
Part of me would have loved a little twist in the end with the epilogue and Katie's POV as it felt all a bit too safe, and a little sad but I do think it reflected a line in the book about a one-way ticket to loneliness and that was handed to Eve at 12 years, and Katie when she was a young adult.
