My third time reading "Barefoot Gen," and just as fascinating and hard as the first, over ten years ago.

Going into reading Gen, every reader should be aware that this is the semi-autobiographical work of an actual survivor of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. This is no second-hand tale, done for a grandparent. Nakazawa lived this. When he draws people walking around with their skin sloughed off, it isn't for the sake of gore. It's accuracy. And it is terrifying.

As much as "Maus" has become common in school curriculum, to educate children about the horrors of the Holocaust, "Gen" deserves a spot on the reading list, as well. There is no sense focusing on one of main atrocities of World War II, without acknowledging the one America itself perpetrated.

If you are going to include this in a public school reading list, do be prepared to defend it against challenges by more conservative parents. Not only due to the focus on American crimes, but also the somewhat over-the-top family "violence" (a common visual hyperbole in Japanese comics) and occasional nudity (without sexuality). Basically, read it through, make note of anything you think someone might use as an excuse, and be prepared.

Perhaps one of the more interesting aspects of "Barefoot Gen" is that it was translated almost entirely by volunteers. It was only in 2008 that all ten volumes were finally available in print in English. Currently, only volume 6 seems to be out of print (at least as sold by Amazon). Readers shouldn't limit themselves to volume 1, as that only covers the months up to the bombing and the first day after the bomb is dropped. The real story picks up in subsequent volumes, as Gen and Hiroshima come to understand what has been done to them, and struggle to live on.

Rating something partly autobiographical always feels weird. Still, there’s something about this work that just doesn’t really resonate with me. It may be because this was my first manga and I’m just not used to the medium yet. Of course I still recognise the huge impact this work has and the power it holds.

Read for class- amazing yet horrifying look inside the dropping of the bomb in Hiroshima. Told from a survivor, this in depth look takes you on an emotional journey through the reality and terror of war.

Somewhat strange art style at times and somewhat goofy, Barefoot Gen tells a deeply serious tale about the bombing of Hiroshima. By the end of this first volume, you have a small sense of the emotional toll the bomb took on families in the city. It's enjoyable and powerful at times, while also silly and lighthearted other times. While the art style isn't my favorite, I really enjoyed learning about the history of the time and appreciate the perspective shared on the tragedy.
