If you have any interest in space, you need to read this book!
This has been the best 10 hours 57 minutes I have spent all year. Most of this I listened to while walking and Mike made me forget that I was exercising, thank God, and made me want to stay out for just another 5 minutes.
Having heard his words of struggle and triumph helped me to understand that I can be encouraged and I can encourage my children and grandchildren to push through any possible struggle to head toward a dream that they may have.
I would be so honored to meet this man and to hug him for all he's accomplished, the dreams he's helped push along and the encouragement he's imparted.
I'm so glad that the author read this book, it made it far more real to me than having someone else read it.

I've read a lot of space/astronaut books but this one is different. Mass talks about the usual stuff but he focuses more on the people, the human aspect. He also seems to be much more transparent about how hard it is to become an astronaut (both the process up to applying and then after being accepted).
I won this book through a Goodreads give away. I found the book a wee bit slow in the beginning, but picked up the pace when Massimino began his work with NASA. I always wanted to know what astronauts did when they weren't on a mission, and what was covered in training, and Massimino did a great job covering both of my questions. His description of his first time spacewalking was amazing and I was a bit envious of his experience. His thoughts later in the book on human exploration and space (after the Columbia disaster) was inspiring and were the perfect words for my feelings on the topic (not only about space exploration, but also on why we each follow our passions).
Massamino's love and passion for space exploration was palpable throughout the book. I hope I'm fortunate enough to meet him one day. Well done sir.

Five stars for being NASA-related! I’m such a NASA nerd. My favorite thing to do for years was watching the astronauts suit up and get ready for liftoff. I even had a favorite phrase. After the Columbia explosion they would do a rendezvous pitch maneuver for the space station to take pictures of the tiles underneath the shuttle. What an amazing adventure they all got to go on. I miss the shuttles. This was a great listen.

I admit it, I am a geek about space - I love to read about space, astronomy, planets, anything extraterrestrial. I loved "Packing for Mars" by Mary Roach, and really enjoyed "Riding Rockets" by Mike Mullane - so this book was right up my alley.
It is the biography of astronaut Mike Massimo - how he overcame obstacles in his life (such as less than perfect eyesight) to join the astronaut program at NASA, and then serve on two shuttle missions, servicing the Hubble Space Telescope.
It is wonderful to read about the journey - the transformation - from ordinary guy into "the Right Stuff" astronaut. I also loved the inside peek into how things work at NASA.
But not only it is the story of one man's journey - it is also the journey we all go on when we have astronauts in space working on the ISS or fixing the Hubble telescope. We can live vicariously through them, and their adventures and experiences take us out of ourselves and force us to broaden our horizons, expand our thinking.
One recurring theme in the book is how hard Mike works to achieve his goal, and it really is inspirational to read. It is encouraging to others who may be shooting for goals that seem out of one's reach - don't give up - keep trying - and watch for opportunities - because they may come from unexpected quarters.
I recommend this to anyone who is a fan of space or astronauts, or just likes to have an inspirational read.
Full disclosure - I won this in a Goodreads giveaway - but even if I had paid full price for this book I would still be raving about it.

I love memoirs and this was no different. It was a great listen, read by the author, thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring.
Fascinating and accessible story of the life of a shuttle era astronaut including incredible Hubble missions.
