Решила почитать книгу после просмотра фильма "Меняющие реальность". Идея фильма показалась весьма интересной, решила почитать первоисточник, но он оказался как-то вообще ни о чем.
Very short story with an interesting premise that could've been explored better.
What the screen writers did to this short story is short of amazing. They extracted the concept and turned into a shmalzy love story. The short story, however, has the main character encounter extraordinary events, but ultimately, he is unchanged. This was my first encounter with Philip K Dick's work (aside from having seen Blade Runner a gazillion times); I'm a little disappointed, but encouraged by the sheer number of books he wrote. Still, it was enjoyable.
I read the version of this short story that was here: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Adjustment_Team
This is the first Philip Dick story I've read - read it because I really liked the movie that was based on it (the Adjustment Bureau).
Since I saw the movie first, it's obvious that I'll compare the two, and my experience with the Adjustment Team was almost entirely based on the movie - the story has a great premise (which it shares with the movie), but the short length makes it difficult to be as engaged with anyone in the story other than the protagonist. Even the Clerk (who has a much bigger and less antagonistic role in the movie) is not really a character in his old right - perhaps the only one who is one is the "Old Man".
I think that overall I like the subtler, less info-dump-y worldbuilding of the short story, but the plot itself was better in the movie. I wish someone would write a full-length novel about a bureaucratic heaven though; it's quite a nice idea.

Dick is always entertaining. I feel like the ending might have been a tad bit anti-climatic, and that perhaps the Adjustment Team could have been better suited as a novella, but the short story is engaging and exciting nonetheless. If anything, Adjustment Team left me wanting more.

The Adjustment Team is the short story that the movie The Adjustment Bureau is loosely based on. But for me, I think that The Adjustment Team is more like a cross between the concepts used in Dark City & The Adjustment Bureau. It was a short enjoyable read.
