I have to rave about this book, which Laura knew I would. She's been mentioning it off and on since....spring, maybe? And I finally dug into it last week and read it in less than three days, really. I have to say, honestly, that this series is incredibly unique and original in a lot of ways I was blowing off as not entirely possible, because the YA market is so saturated with everything lately.
But it is. Crazy unique. The lay out. The way the main character is. How the characters that circle around her are.
If you haven't read it, you should. There's so much I want to say and can't. Read it. Read it for yourself and love it.

I read this while I was out sick with the flu. I did have a hard time focusing on the story and the characters which may have been due to the sickness on my part or on the writing itself. I did find that the passage of time in this novel did not feel realistic and did not "feal" the character's emotions. I am likely going to try and read the second in the series with a clear head and see if it improves the experience.

I don't have too much to say about this one. I'm just feeling pretty meh about it.
I bought the rest of the series relatively cheap, so I'm going to go ahead and marathon the rest of the books.

I don't give out five star reviews that often, but this one was deserving.
This book has so many elements ranging from women in power, women's bodies, politics, spirituality, etc. I was deeply enthralled and can not wait to read the next book in the series.

A quick, fun read. I really related to the main character (a smart, fat reader :) ). I liked her voice and her journey throughout the book. This is, however, very obviously a young adult book and has very many of the young adult trappings (I like those things though, so they don't bother me). I thought the system of magic was unique and I actually appreciated the blend of religious fantasy for a change (I generally don't like that particular blend of genres). I thought it was fairly well-written and I do believe that I would enjoy the next in the series.

I wanted to like this more. It definitely had potential. I think it was a bit lacking in the world building area - would've liked to know more about the Godstone, what's up with all the magic, etc. I also didn't like the man vs. nature (Elisa in the wilderness) sections, I kind of breezed through them because I thought they were boring. This is more of a personal preference than an actual flaw; I don't really enjoy that type of writing in any book but that's just me. Also hated (spoiler alert!) when they killed off Humberto. Thought it was too quick and that it wasn't dealt with enough. I did enjoy that it was fairly action-packed and unpredictable. I will read the next one, but not right this second.

This series was recommended to me when I said I loved the Throne of Glass series: and she was right.
I only give this one three stars because I found it hard to get into. I don't want to use the word "slogged" to describe how I kept pushing through, but once the writer hit her stride with the main character Elisa, SHE HIT IT. By the time I got to the end of this one (book 1), I snatched up the other two.
If you like this one at all, you'll really appreciate books 2 and 3.

I enjoyed the first book in this series. There was a part at the beginning when I started to get bored, but then the author changed it up and sucked me back in again. The action was exciting and the romance was sweet and sad, but didn't ruin the book for me. Will start the next one, but have no idea where it will go and if it can hold my interest.
