“How sinister it is to relive your life backward. To see things you hadn’t at the time. To realize the horrible significance of events you had no idea were playing out around you.”

This was a fun mystery to read because it was told in reverse… so unique. The plot was interesting and the twists just kept coming. Some reviewers found the time travel aspect to be confusing, but if you’re open to the idea of multiverses I think you’ll enjoy it. I was expecting this to feel much more like “Groundhog Day” with the time travel component but it was never too repetitive, IMO. In fact, I thought it was beautifully written and l highlighted a good amount of text for a fiction novel. Giving it 4 because for some reason I really struggled to get into the first half of the book. After the halfway point, the pace really took off and I was invested fully. Even woke up early on my Sunday to get to the ending

Sparknotes: Clever concept that had potential but was not well executed due to the messiness of the time travel and lack of resolve.

I jumped on the WPWT bandwagon after seeing it on so many Top Book lists from 2022. Instantly, it started off strong and captivating. You meet Jen and her family going through an unfathomable tragedy and you are engrossed right off the bat. But then Jen starts traveling back in time to before The Event - possibly with a chance to prevent it. This premise was super engaging! However, before long the momentum slowed, almost to a halt. It took me a while to get through the better part of the first half. Gillian’s “world-building” ended up lacking a convincing connection to the resolve at the end of the book. The slowness almost caused me to abandon the book. Overall, I’m glad I didn’t. The book was an inverted bell curve, starting strong and then lulling before taking off again. The second half was far more engaging as you start to get some questions answered. That being said, it was a little difficult to follow and keep track of where she was at in her time travel journey, so I just stopped trying to keep up with that altogether.

Without spoiling I’ll say I felt it lacked emphasis on the path back forward and the impact of messing with time loops. Everything felt disjointed and weirdly paced, with the ending being wrapped up in hyperspeed.

I loved this book! The way she wrote about time travel felt fresh, a new perspective. This story kept my attention the whole time. I thought I had figured out the ending, and then she threw in a really good twist. I would definitely recommend!
