Mo Willems has fostered a love of reading in the minds for many over the years. Now, there is a branch-off series full of the same emotion and easy to read words between the covers, with this one written by Dan Santat. With three cookies on a plate, everyone should be happy. However, there is a problem, as four friends want to share the spoils equally. They hum and haw and try to find a solution, thinking that cookie allocation should go by size or by who reportedly likes/dislikes cookies, but nothing seems to work. A little nervous energy helps get the brain juices flowing and some possibilities arise. That is, until someone offers up the milk! Neo loves cookies and also likes to share. While I am sure he would not let things get to such a fiasco, he surely would want to find a way to get the cookies from the plate to his mouth. With him here for the week, perhaps we ought to bake some cookies (or muffins) and see how best to divide them.
Conflict resolution through neurosis and math -- what more can you ask of a picture book?
I've been crying out, "We need more Elephant-and-Piggie-ish books!"
I've been crying out loudly.
Someone has heard my cries.
Someone has written this book.
Thank you, Dan Santat and Mo Willems.

I really really really love Dan Santat's illustrations. I may have to put him on the list with Jon Klassen as illustrators I'll always read. The little models of the characters to indicate an idea are really adorable and weird. I love that this is a book about fractions without actually mentioning fractions! And I love how very important this situation is to our protagonists. THERE MUST BE EQUAL COOKIES. The way everyone flips out when the hippo keeps snapping cookies in half is just delightful.
