it was:

a) problematic
b) addictive

so absolutely my jam (and one of the few occasions where a sci-fi story was interesting for me)

Yeah no... maybe I'll write a proper review on my blog...

4/5 stars

Fuuuuck, this was a good book. If it wasn't for the fact that I found myself not actually as invested in the gay aspects of this book as I hoped to be, this would be a 5 stars.

What this book IS a 5 stars for is the fact that, despite what the blurb says, this is more of a character study than a murder mystery-eqsue novel. The first 200 pages feels like it's just us inside Rem's head, understanding how he thinks and interacts and feels about everyone and everything around him, before any of the new murders begin happening. And, honestly, Rem isn't even all that likeable- he keeps secrets he shouldn't keep, lies to people, and honestly, isn't that much of a 'Nice Guy' as everyone labels him. But that just made him real , because he recognised all of these aspects of his personality and did stupid shit anyway. I also really love how much art and music were weaved into the plot and the lives of the characters- an unexpectedly intimate addition!

Like I said at the beginning, there is a gay romance, but I don't feel like it's the main focus, which I wasn't expecting. Rem's love life is honestly 'It's Complicated' from the get-go, and it felt like there was a bit towards the end that was Rem excusing his behaviour, but he quickly blames himself for being a dick anyway, which kinda messed me up a bit. My feelings for the LGBT+ aspects are 'it's complicated', too; on the one hand, I wasn't AS invested as I hoped I'd be, and on the other, I cried at the end (READ: THIS IS NOT A HAPPY LGBT+ BOOK. BUT IT IS A GOOD BOOK.).

I would 100% recommend this as a character study, but I wouldn't go so far as to recommend it if you want to read something happy and gay. Definitely a book with a powerful message!

Government conspiracies are fun but school shootings are not.

I cannot, for the love of my life, explain how this book shook me. All the ways it shows you how life isn't fair, how there's so much you don't know about everyone around you. God, this book hurt. And it's one of those that I'll never be able to read again but that I love with all my heart.

Literally read this in 2 hours because I coudn’t stop reading. Wowowow this messed me up but it was so good. I’m heartbroken now though because I thought it was going to be played out so differently and IT WASN’T. Rem deserves better and /GOOD EMPATHETIC KIND/ Franklin does too. Literally going to pour myself into fan fiction now for those alternate universes.

I'M SHOOK.
