First half was solid and intriguing. Second half got too convoluted to be believable, even for this genre of book. Fell really flat at the ending.

Thank you NetGalley, St. Martins Press and B.A. Paris for letting me read “The Prisoner” in exchange for an honest review.

Maybe, just maybe, I should stay away from the most requested books? Maybe I am jinxing it by wanting to read them so much and then end up being disappointed?! This book had a great start, but then the ship started sinking, and I was the captain leaving the sinking ship last…

This is my first one by B.A. Paris. It definitely started out with a bang. Kidnapping. Pitch black room, no sound, nobody speaking. The stuff of nightmares. Yikes. So how did our heroine Amelie end up there? What did she do to deserve that?

Amelie never had it easy. Her mother passed away when she was a child and her dad died when she was 17ish. She does not want tonend up in foster care and runs away to London. After being let go of her latest job in a restaurant, she meets Carolyn by chance who takes her under her wing. Amelie’s luck turns for the better. A job, a home, a friend. Just what she needed. Then she is introduced to Ned Hawthorne and her life changes yet again. A Vegas wedding, in title only, a charade, temporarily. Tempting, hug? Marrying a billionaire l… what can possibly go wrong?

It started out so good, this one. All the potential in the world. But the second half… as said, the ship was sinking and hit rock bottom. Titanic.

Even for a psychological thriller this was on the unrealistic side. Is life really like that, you follow a woman home from a cafe - to check she is ok - and then she offers you a job and becomes your bestie?

Maybe it’s just me, but how does she think she can go to college and study law if she has no papers that she’s finished school?! Unless in the uk you finish school at 16, which is highly doubt…

The second part seems to drag on and on and on… and on. Too much explaining.
So how on earth do I rate this? Part one, 5⭐️, part 2 2⭐️ at best. And only pity points because I liked Amelie. So torn. This could have been a banger…. I think I might borrow the words of dear Jayme… b-list movie… so far fetched and bad, that it could actually be good.

I had about half of the ending figured out, especially the "big reveal". So it was just meh on that front, but it was still an enjoyable book. The characters weren't very likable even the main MC, she was just soo clueless! I did like the atmosphere and that stuff. I would have liked to get to know other characters besides Amelie better, we don't get much about anyone else.
