This book hurt me!!!!

But I will put myself through the trauma of the sequel so I guess at this point it's my own fault.

It takes a while to understand what is going on so be patient. It's dark and bleak (but then again it is about slavery and oppression). It involves bad things happening to children and to adults who are just trying to live their lives.

I absolutely loved this book! It's very dark (fair warning) but it's done so well. Nothing feels gratuitous, it paints a dark but brutally honest picture.

I loved the different lived experiences depicted amongst the diverse characters (including a poly relationship!) and he world-building without clear explanation was a fun mystery to unravel as I went along.

Highly recommend, Jemisin has an incredible gift and so much talent! I've already requested the next one in the series from my local library.

This book deserves all of its accolades and hype. N. K. Jemisin has created an amazing story full of outstanding worldbuilding, unique and incredible pov characters, and a plot that had me guessing and glued throughout the entire book. This is probably one of the best books I have read so far this year and it is definitely one of the rare 6🌟 reads.

perhaps it was my brain but i got kinda confused with the narrator thingy. i do think it was super interesting to have multiple "narrators", one of them being 2nd person, but towards the end i got a bit lost with the characters (if you know, you know). still, i hope i like the rest of the trilogy a bit better because the plot is certainly super interesting and relevant!! and i loved the diversity and the queer rep!

Incredible and intense. Jemisin writes in a sprawling (yet tightly connected) way, such that every piece feels so purposeful. I've never read a book quite like it.
