I love this universe so much, and I'm heart broken for this to be my last contact with the characters. This series prompts the reader to find the beauty in the commonplace and gives hope for a brighter and kinder future. This series makes me want to roast chickpeas, laugh at the absurdity of how human society functions, and to give as much of myself as I can to making the world into a place I want to be in. Becky Chambers constantly surprises me. My perspective is clouded by my experience as an American, and every time medical care, food, water, and shelter are freely given; every time a child wit a non-binary gender is correctly named and gendered; every time people react with kindness and under the assumption that no harm was meant by a mistake or misspokenn word, I am amazed and jealous. The widely varried lifespans of the different species and their perspectives and frustrations with the GC and related wars add to the richness of this world that I've come to deeply love.

I adore Becky Chambers' writing style. There's not much of a plot, bad thing happens then the rest of the book is the characters interacting/learning about each other and their cultures while the problem is resolved by other people. There is conflict between the different characters but also understanding and friendship in some cases. It was a very comforting and was exactly what I needed to read right now.

I don't often rate books 5 stars, even if I love them. In my mind, rating something 5 stars means that I will continue thinking about it for years to come. And that is a high bar to clear.

The Galaxy, and The Ground Within absolutely clears it.  The delicate and humane way that Becky Chambers deals with all her characters makes me want to weep, but joyfully. I love this world that she has created, one that is so similar to ours in but completely and utterly alien. Not to be reductive, but these characters, while all being (literally) alien, are filled with such humanity that you can't help but love them.

This was a wonderful end to one of my favorite series.
