The blurb's comparison to Black Mirror doesn't lie: "This Is Not the Jess Show" is a really punchy little novel reminiscent of Black Mirror's "White Bear" episode and packed with delightful twists, 90s nostalgia, and a solid running commentary on the manipulation of relationships and fame. Even readers who are familiar with some of the tropes of this genre will have fun reading this one; the pacing keeps you wanting to turn the pages, and the entire world feels well-realized and complete. I lowkey got Grady Hendrix vibes from the writing, too, which, in my opinion, is a excellent sign. Honestly it's been a hot second since a YA thriller really did it for me, but I read this in two sittings and had a delight seeing it all unfold!

So fun and unique. A propulsive read! Would’ve loved this as a teen and loved it now.

I found out about this book by watching Jessethereader on YouTube. He did a readathon and this was one of the books. the summary of the book seemed interesting enough but a little creepy so I held off from reading it. Until now when I figure that I won't let my fear/anxiety get in the way of what I want to read! getting into the book I loved how it was similar to The Truman Show and I found it so interesting how the main characters life COMPLETELY spiraled out of control after the 10th chapter. My only problem with the book was that it was kind of a hard problem to fix. how do you get out of the spotlight when you have unknowingly been in it all your life?

Cute enough, but nothing groundbreaking. Carey does make some important comments about the nature of social media and how parents use their children as vehicles for content without consent.
