Not her best, but it was very amusing

3.5. Good (it's Margaret Atwood!) but not phenomenal.

I normally love Margaret Atwood but I feel as if this had little-to-no direction. I had a difficult time getting through it. The ending was strange (though I like the very last few sentences). As a whole, however, this is choppy and uninteresting. I wanted more from this - she creates a world that is quasi-dystopian and then kind of dances around things. Lots of frustration here.

Yeah, no.
Promising start but it lacked pretty much everything that makes her other novels so great.

What the fuck did I just read?

Content warning for rampant sexual abuse, casual homophobia/gay panic, and domestic abuse

It’s… too close for comfort? I can easily imagine many parts of it.

at no point did i understand where this plot was going or why

Wow, not really sure how to write a review for this one, what I will say is that I will never look at a blue teddy bear in quite the same way again!

There was a lot that I did enjoy about this book. It has a very interesting premise, multiple characters I was willing to invest in, and I had no idea where it was going to go. But now that I know that it was at least initially released as a serial in Byliner, the rambling and odd structure make more sense. It seemed like there were a lot of points Atwood was trying to make about the degradation of society (duh, dystopian), objectification of women's bodies, and morality in general but none of it ever seemed to really come to a head. Neither of the two main characters seem to learn anything from their experiences other than how much they wish they hadn't had them. Is that the point? And, I mean, I don't read a ton of dystopian novels but there was a lot of sex or sexual dialogue that just seemed to be there to be there. Like every damn thought Stan had about Veronica was how much of a waste she was because of her sexual attractions but boy how he'd like to press himself into her.

It was an interesting read and I finished it pretty quickly.
