Ok, my review game has been off for a bit, so excuse me if I'm a tad rusty. I had an ARC copy of this book, with what is truly the most stunning cover (not the one here), and I picked it up for that reason, and for its author. I'm picky about my YA, especially sci-fi, so that was probably not the best plan. I'm sure that the final copy of this book is a good time. The world-building and characters are fun, although the story leaves something to be desired. But altogether with it being an ARC, it was a eh from me.

I did enjoy this! The pacing was a little weird - I have no idea how much time actually passed in the story. I loved the characters and did not know what to expect half the time. XD Will definitely read the sequel.

4/4.5 stars.

Jam packed with action, wit and positive representation.

The World building is immense, so much thought has been put into the history and the plethora of cultures. Such a fully fleshed out galaxy really pulls the reader in.

The only reason this story doesn't get the full 5 stars from me is that I felt there was so much information loaded in straight from the go, that some of the connections between characters seemed rushed. I felt some characters didn't get their chance to shine and some relationships were fast tracked so quickly that it didn't feel as genuine as it should have.

But I did really enjoy the book and look forward to the sequel.

I've loved every book I've ready by Charlie Jane Anders, so I wasn't shocked to love this book just as much. Tina was literally born for great things. She's the clone of a great alien warrior. But when she finally gets picked up by a spaceship, it's not quite the futuristic experience she expected.

I loved the world building of the galaxy and alien races, as well as the questions Tina has to answer for herself about what her destiny really is. I think this is the best YA science fiction I've read in a really long time.

I won't spoil the ending, but it invokes one of my favorite tropes in science fiction, and I can't wait to see where the series goes next.
