(4/5) I think this is the book I enjoyed most out of the series, though the other two books did have enjoyable elements as well. The thing that pushed this one further though was the banter of the group with Hershaw, Nadia, the twins, Mal, Alina, Zoya, Adrik and obviously Oncat. Their little funny moments amongst preparing themselves to likely die brutal deaths were a bright ray of light (no pun intended). I also really enjoyed the way Zoya and Alina’s relationship was developed past the stereotypical girl hate cliche that some books in this time fell prey to. They’re not besties by any means, but they do respect each other. Plus, Zoya’s personality gets to shine here.

I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again: I don’t think Mal is that bad. His weird possessive moments were mostly in the first book and the first half of the second, and he even gave a speech to Alina in the end about how he was so sorry he acted like that and how it came from a place of insecurity that she was meant for much more than he was. He’s not a super great character personality-wise, but their sarcastic exchanges were very nice to read. The epilogue chapter made me a little emotional even.

I’m so so stupid for this, but when I saw the little snippet at the end that was Leigh Bardugo’s note about how she was super excited about a new book she was writing called Six of Crows, it made me a little misty eyed. I’ve literally already read the series twice and it made me emotional just seeing it. I will be bringing this up in therapy

I did not see the ending happening quite like it did. Like I knew the fold would be destroyed but not like that.

Writing style is still really good. I loved the mystery in the book, hence why I read it in a day, but I hate the ending so much.
You can't just kill so many people and the bring one of them back just because. Mal should have died and Nikolai should have ended up with Alina, not alone.

Nikolai <33
He deserved so much more. I love him so fkn much.

The darkling did not deserve any of what Alina gave him Aleksander was long gone, his name should no longer be spoken.
