I loved Hall’s previous novel The Raw Shark Texts so was eager to read this. I do think it’s missing the emotional core that book has to ground some of this one’s self-reflexive, post-modern shenanigans about writing, the publishing industry, religion, the entropic collapse of the world, what have you. But it’s definitely a joy to tear through and is constantly fun and challenging simultaneously, even if by the end I’m left wondering if it’s trying for too much.

This book threw me! I read it really quickly as I never really knew what was happening - I was questioning things throughout. I don't know if I loved the ending, but it definitely made me think. Mystery, philosophy, authors, interesting characters... I'd recommend this to almost anyone, and I've been thinking about it lots since I finished a few weeks ago.

I don’t know how to review this... it’s so weird...

Ever finish a book and think, what in the hell did I just read? — but like, in a good way, not a this is so bad it gave me brain damage kind of way? Well, that was my experience with Maxwell’s Demon in a nutshell. I read Stephen Laws’s first novel, The Raw Shark Texts, back in 2017, and really liked it — so when I saw his newest book in the library, I knew I had to check it out. Like its predecessor, it’s very well-written and contains several pages of text arranged into certain shapes (in this case, leaves). I am personally not a fan of the philosophical stuff, which meant I didn’t enjoy it as much as others might. But it certainly was a page-turner, and overall, a very fun read.

So many plot holes!

It's a weird book, I stopped and started reading it more than once because I was fascinated by the weirdness and loved the style of writing.
It starts like a sort of "this is my life book" and then it mixes a lot of different things, from Bible to physic.
I think you can love or hate it, at the end I loved it.
It's a sort of lysergic travel and I loved but you must be ready for a trip.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
