Despite the overly-conversational tone that often made it difficult for me to feel invested in the narrative of her trip, I loved her no-nonsense, no-theology discussion of the need for spirituality in her life, in our lives. She doesn't preach; she doesn't act like what works for her is for everyone. She simply tells her story of survival through spirituality (in all of its various forms) and, in doing so, inspires her readers. Or at least she did me.

I first read this book when I was a sophomore in college and I'd be lying if I said it didn't have a profound affect on me at that specific time and place. But as sentimental of a read as this is for me, approaching it now in my 30s (the age I think Liz was when she wrote it), I can see why it gets its fair share of criticism.
There was one reviewer on here who described Liz's visits to other countries as essentially going to a version of Disneyland - safe and sanitary and low stakes. It is important to remember other cultures and countries are more than just background characters in our lives, and I wish this book had a little more ego death.
That being said, I think Liz has a good heart and to say nothing spiritual can be gleaned from travel is foolish. The wheat outweighs the chaff for me here, personally.
