I loved all the reflections that came out of the years of renovating a home. Sometimes the historical facts bogged down some of the narrative, but for the most part they enhanced the memoir.

This is a collection of essays about how the author did a huge renovation (including lifting and spinning!) on her house in Port Townsend, Washington, which is just a few hours from me. She associates different parts of the house/renovation process with parallels in other aspects of life in very descriptive detail, research studies and nonfiction tangents, and cerebral - almost mystical - musings.

"There is not yet any definitive proof, but what I know is that when I am looking at a mirror ferry, it feels like a recognition of an alternate possibility that makes me ponder all of them."

The above quote from the book did compel me to do a bit of eye rolling. Sometimes the author's musings were extremely tangential, too descriptive, or too cerebral for me. I often was most interested in the actual renovation process and not the didactic "life lessons" that went along with the process.

Overall, I did find the collection very interesting. I found Erica Bauermeister's most recent book NO TWO PERSONS extremely good and less didactic than this one.

House Lessons reminds me quite a bit in tone and approach to Animal Vegetable Miracle, just with a home instead of a garden at its heart.

A thoroughly enjoyable read about love of place and love of home. The ending came up a little quick for me, overall really enjoyed this book!
