I'll say that I enjoyed the stories that were a little more grounded than the more out-there ones, I feel like Chang's characters and plotlines shine a bit more there. However the fantastical, and at time horror adjacent elements give this collection a great quark that makes them memorable.

adventurous dark funny inspiring mysterious relaxing slow-paced

Surreal spinning earnest stories that play with ancestors, deities, spirituality, morbidity and day-to-day life all at once. & In such a way! Flinching, unflinching, banal, romantic and magical and feels true. Also, it made me realise I need to read more queer lit. Loved this read.

I really loved the uncanny valley, almost synesthetic qualities of this narrative style, but unfortunately I heard the audiobook and the reading itself almost made me want to give it 3 stars. I’ll have to re-visit and read it to myself to be able to properly absorb the beauty of the writing. The audiobook is really distracting and doesn’t match the tone of the stories at all.
