Such beautifully written stories - so lyrical and a great introduction to k-ming chang's writing
Loved the exploration of queerness in these stories.

Quotes:
- I had an aunt who massaged my elbows when I cried and said the heart is a hinge, to live it must bend.

- She cried so hard and so long that the sea came forward and punched her out for spending so much of its salt.

-Mothers grow up married to their sons, but we're born knowing our daughters will leave us.

-We pray to a god who is a girl in some countries and a boy in others.

Absolutely beautiful but also grotesque in a fascinating and life-altering way

DID NOT FINISH

I can't get into this prose even though I feel like I'm the target audience. It's too larger than life with not enough substance, too much myth and I can't suspend my disbelief. Basically the same issue I have with most of K-Ming Chang's work.

sooo so stunning - short stories are usually hit or miss for me but these were so? incredibly written?? the themes of asian traditions and mythology were used in such interesting ways and all the stories felt just the right amount of uncomfortable and unsettling. i feel like i will think ab this collection for quite a while

somehow visceral and dreamlike at once; haunting and bold and soft and innocent. made me feel both squeamish and in awe of its rawness and imagination.
