The thing about this collection is that some stories are amazing, I laughed outloud wifh xífù, was mesnerized by Widows and a bit moved by Meals for Mourners, but the rest of the stories were kind of meh, I even got the feeling of being repetitive.

Magic realism gone so wrong it did a whole 360…in a straight line! I recognise the reoccurring themes of womanhood, queerness, and immigrant-lore in each chapter. Unfortunately, nothing in the writing made me want to tether myself (emotionally, intellectually, or otherwise) to the words, characters, narrative etc. Balderdash can be beautifully written, but it’s still balderdash!

the prose of this atmospheric, surrealistic short story collection comes across as almost lyrical at times. her visceral descriptions may not be everyone's favorite but they are definitely mine.

I liked the writing style, though sometimes it became a bit tiring, the dense metaphors were rather difficult to parse. The style was incredibly beautiful, but I feel that it is more suited to poetry than to prose. Reminded me somewhat of Ocean Vuong and of a movie called "Rebels of the Neon God".
