Pappyland: A Story of Family, Fine Bourbon, and the Things That Last

The Van Winkle story is fascinating! I love reading about what my home state is known for: bourbon and horses. Sports journalist Wright Thompson spent three years working with the Van Winkle family and the result is this fun examination of the brand, it’s history, and the folks behind it. By the end, you come to really adore Julian III, who, with his son, still oversees the operations of their elusive wheated bourbon.

This came across as more of an enthusiasts book than one for the general reader. Enjoyed learning a bit more about bourbon / whiskey in general but didn’t get all that much from the particulars of the Pappyland dynasty. Again, it seems like those folks who cherish Pappy Van Winkel will love this.

The story of the Van Winkle family and the bourbon was very good and interesting. But, you have to wade through the author’s ramblings to pull out the story. Thankfully the book is a quick read and the bourbon portion is compelling.
This was an enjoyable read. The story was captivating and insightful.
