I really really really wanted to like this book. The premises of the story were good and the idea intriguing. However, there were too many things that kept bothering me. One of the biggest was the lead character. Apart of the fact that she was one of those "special" ones who happened to have powers that no one got for a century or so (haven't that trop been used too many times already?), she was just annoying. At times, however, I have to admit that she was okay. But, otherwise, she had no confidence and she gave up way too easily. At some point, one of the characters (my favourite one actually) told her "Do you call that trying?" after she yet again gave up right from the start. The odd part was that she actually asked people to help her and than she acted like a baby and cried that she couldn't do it. Also, at some point in the book, she snaps at her friend and declares that is finally free. That part was just out of character for her, as up until now she only complained about having magic. And the part that triggered her wasn't even that strong to do so.
So, after my unlease on the character, here are some other stuff that bothered me :
-the writing was really bad at some parts of the book and felt like I was reading the work of a child, which is odd, since the author seemed to can write and she had a good idea for the book
-the love interest was probably the only character that kept me reading, all mysterious and evil. But, he soon got boring and lessen his darkness. So, I can't say that I liked the romance with him, as she seemed helpless around him and he regarded her more like a precious specimen.
-the plot was predictable, except of the last twist, that was just out of the blue.
So, two out of five for this book. I don't know if I'll be continuing the series any time soon, but I do hope that the rest of the books are better.

I felt a bit too old for this book. Vhalla seems very immature and has problems making decisions. That annoyed me. This book has got too many eyerolling moments plus there was a love triangle which I dislike. I won't continue the series.

I started reading this book not knowing much. A reviewer I trust recommended it so I gave it a try, and I’m glad I did because this is a well written fantasy romance. A few things I noted:
+ The world the author builds isn’t highly innovative but it is intriguing. I’m looking forward to Vhalla uncovering the empire’s dark history in the next book.
+ I was not feeling the romance in the beginning but that definitely changed as the characters developed. Not sure if this romance would be classified as a slow burn but it felt like it.
+ There were lots of interruptions during moments that I did not want to end.
+ There were a few of setups for misunderstandings but I’m glad that it did not become a huge issue. Vhalla definitely found herself in some compromising situations lol.
+ Overall, 4.5/5!

Finished in about 3 hrs. I feel like I’ve read this before although my goodreads history tells me I haven’t. Maybe a book with a very similar story. The book was alright, the story was intriguing. However there were some grammatical issues and certain sections were awkwardly written which detracted from the overall appeal.

ゞ "A sorcerer with battle scars, dead friends, and blood on her hands occupied the mirror. The frightened faces of the senators came back to Vhalla with vivid clarity. They were sending her to war, so she would go and become something they had every right to fear."

₊❏ Oh my goodness gracious. This book may not be on my 5 star shelf, but boy i really wish it was. I found it easy to relate to the main character, but mostly after the first half of the book. The one thing that had bothered me most was her indecision, which had stretched out for longer than i expected it to. On another hand, i can totally understand her, as being thrown into a world you know absolutely nothing and ripped away from the only bit of safety you had.. it must be hard. Either way, this was a really fun and quick read, and a solid 4.5 ★

THIS WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!
I wasn't able to write a review as soon as I finished it because I was just so caught up with my feelings for this book that I couldn't formulate the right words to describe just how amazing it was. This isn't going to be a long review because I don't want to give anything about this book away - it is so much better to read it without knowing much about it because that's what I did. All I'm going to say is that this is definitely the best book I've read this year and I hope the next books I read will be just as amazing as this one, if not more. The characters and world-building were all I've ever wanted in a book, and the narration was clear and exciting. I could not have asked for more from this book!
